Customer Reviews:
4 out of 5 stars nice looking, good interval timer, a few quirks   July 29, 2010
ekphrasis
I bought this watch because I needed something to keep intervals during my training sessions. I didn't find very many basic digital watches that have an interval timer capable of linking together intervals of varying lengths. If you want to have a work period followed by a rest period, you need at least two count-down timers that are linked together. It may be that more digital watches for sale online do this, but often the product descriptions don't really explain the features well, so I went with this watch, because it was clear that it had the feature I was looking for.

And it does have an interval timer that works very well. You can set five different linked intervals, and the timer will cycle through them and then repeat. This is especially useful for certain training protocols, like the popular Tabata method (20 secs work followed by 10 secs rest, repeated 8 times). The watch additionally has two other timer modes--a normal countdown timer (I use this for kitchen stuff) that can repeat or just count down once, and a count up timer.

There is one quirk with the interval timer, however. The timer makes a beep to indicate when you are switching from one segment to the next. This is useful if you're busy doing pushups or running or something active and don't want to stare at the watch. However, it doesn't appear that you can turn off the beep, which I think you can do on other sports watches like the Timex ironman models. But in addition to that, the watch is smart enough to recognize if you are doing a long "work" interval followed by a short "rest" interval, because it appears that if you set one interval for 20 seconds or longer and the other one is short, the watch actually beeps the *entire duration* of the shorter interval. I was surprised to discover this because the instruction booklet says nothing about this feature, and apparently it can't be turned off. If both of the intervals are shorter than 20 seconds, it does not do this. It isn't necessarily a bad thing because the constant beeping during the rest interval happens once per second, so you can use the alarm to count out your rest. You can also push a button to silence it if you desire. But I was surprised that this feature couldn't be deactivated. Be warned about this because it would make the interval timer *very* annoying in a quiet setting, like if you were using it to take a test in school or something like that.

Overall the watch is easy to use and pretty cool looking, with nice big digits on the display that are quick to read when you're running. The buttons are easy to press if you wear it with a jacket or a long sleeve shirt--sometimes I find that it changes mode on its own--but this isn't too bothersome. And finally, the "shadow race" feature that lets you run against previous stored times is really great if you're into tracking progress/improvement on a run.
